Star Vs the Forces of Evil Doodles

Yeah, I got around to seeing this. Ya see I NEVER looked at this show because...it sounded stupid. Star vs. The Forces of Evil. Just...sounded like a REALLY bad name for a show. Trying way too hard to catch the viewer's attention.

But the other week I was going back through my favorite video game show ever, Bomberman Jetters, to see some old episodes when I saw a link to a video of the show in the sidebar on youtube. It was a video called "Just Friends" and looked like it was a scene from the actual show instead of someone's music video or something so, out of curiosity as to something that'd call itself that from a Disney show, I clicked on it.

...and I had no idea what the fuck the situation was. There was some blonde girl that sings an embarrassingly catchy song with some boy and another girl that he ends up kissing and that she gets taken aback by. I was...very confused. So I decided to watch the whole show to see what led up to that situation. And my god...it was fun as hell. I mean...I was not expecting that. Nor was I expecting to actually enjoy the inevitable romance drama that would occur. But I did. Normally romance just makes things boring as fucking shit to me, but here's it's actually fun. And it's the ONLY time I've ever liked a "love triangle". I mean, it's pretty sad, but it's pretty fuckin' funny at the same time. That's what drives the show. At the end of the day it's a cartoon and it knows it.

And I think that's what's put Disney ahead of the game this generation for me when it comes to cartoons. I know CN's got their Steven Universe and what-not, but Disney, they're the ones that feel the most like actual cartoons nowadays. And that probably stems partly from Craig McCracken. Star's creator comes from Wander Over Yonder and it certainly shows. It carries on that spirit of fun and pure enjoyment that the Cartoon Cartoons had. I already loved Gravity Falls when that was airing, but...Star MIGHT actually top it (it helps that the show isn't just ending out of nowhere (and even has a fourth season ordered after that yet-to-be-made third season)).

Now obviously, to anyone that's watched the show, the two seasons that've been done so far get a bit different. 2's more plot-driven than 1 and more dire, and 1's a lot more of an "everyday different adventure with bumbling villain" scenario. And I love em both. A lot of people get annoyed with the latter, but I really don't see why. MOST cartoons throughout history have done that. Flinstones, Ed, Edd, n Eddy, Powerpuff Girls, Scooby Doo. Everything. But nowadays you gotta have a big intricate on-going thread of "character development" (god, reactions have made me just hate those two words). And I love Ludo on top of that. He's just such a fun bad guy whether it be his "those aren't my keys" personality from Season 1 or his "but I want him to die" dangerous personality from Season 2.

The real threat though is Toffee. And while he is nice to watch, I felt he was a bit...too obvious. I mean, he was TOO calm and collected to me. I figured "okay, they're throwing this serious guy in that'll be bad, but that'll just make the real villain that they're gonna do later that much more sinister". But then it turned out the obvious choice was what it looked like. Just...kinda disappointed that it wasn't more convoluted. Still like him, just...coulda been more to it.

But while I watched the show I was drawing things of it in my sketchbook, which turned into this page. Honestly it's been ages since I've felt so invested in a show that I wanna doodle things of it this much. Mostly it's Star Marco stuff because, I'm sorry, it's obvious they're gonna be together by the end. Blood Moon Eternal Bond, Star's crush, their lives together, and the fact that they're based off the creator and her husband. Jackie's fine, but they're clearly gonna have to break up at some point, and there's no way that Marco's just gonna sit back after Star's had to "leave Earth...probably forever...".

And while I can't stand a lot of shit that reactors do in their videos, honorable mention goes to TheFlamingShark when he watches Mewberty where Marco first meets Glossaryck.

Glossaryck: "High Schools have excellent pudding." "Pudding!"
TheFlamingShark: "...high schools have regular ass pudding..."
